Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with Johnson V4 60 deg loop charged Ocean Pro outboards? Looking to re-power and have a couple to select from.

It's not a FICHT and is carbureted. This is around the time that BRP bought OMC. Should I be concerned about the quality?

Much appreciated.

BRP bought the bankrupt OMC company in March of 2001.

I believe one of the final stakes in OMC's coffin was the failures of FICHT technology. The 90HP Ocean Pro from what I have heard was a good motor. I really don't think they had problems with their 2 stroke carburated (spelling?) line at all. I'm sure you will always find someone who did actually have problems but I don't think it was all that common IMHO.

Thanks for the quick response Scott. I see you have some Yamahas as well as Evinrude/OMC motors. Any preference?

Scott is right....

The carbureted Johnsons were just about all bullet proof.

There were some Johnson Fichts during the period from about 1998 to 2001...
The Johnson and Evinrude Fichts during the above period are the ones to be careful of.

Well Fitz... over the years I have owned OMC, Yamaha, Force, Evinrude and Johnson. My favorites to date have been the Yamaha's. Second has been the OMC's. Third Mercury - and well Force never ever ever again.

When it comes to a used engine it really depends on how it was cared for. I would take those Johnson 90's any day. I would also take a Yamaha or Merc 90 of the same vintage. They would have to be Carb'd though.

I am restoring a 1965 Sakkonet....and I mean soup to nuts. the boat came with a 1990 70 Merc and I haven't even touched it yet. Engine hour gauge says 498hours. I don't think I want to even spend a cent on making that motor seaworthy, or even finding out. I want to try and go with new, or newer power in the spring. I am thinking about donating this motor to our local tch school. Am I being stupid?
