I'm looking at a 18 ft 1992 Outrage with 150 hp Yamaha 2 stroke that is showing approx 90 psi on all cylinders.
90 psi seems to be low for that motor. Do you think the motor is repairable or should I be considering buying a
new outboard? The pics show a decent looking hull.
Comments please.
Thanks in advance.

As long as they are within 10% of each other I would not worry. Or get a mechanic to check the motor out.

Another of my concerns is that I don't know what the compression should be. I'll be calling Yamaha tomorrow for that info.

Is this a 19 Outrage II? If so, that is same year make model as mine, including the engine.

I don’t have the compression spec in front of me, but have a vague memory it should be around 120. I could be wrong on that, though.

One weak spot with these engines is that the shift-shaft was (incredibly) made out of mild steel instead of stainless. You’ll want to budget to replace it if it hasn’t been yet.

If you can provide a link we could take a look at the photos and give you suggestions for items to check carefully.

Hi JRP,
The compression tells me that the motor probably has to be replaced.
Here's the link
(removed email address instead if a link)
thanks.

Just checked with a Yamaha mechanic, the compression new was 135 psi. He says when it drops below 100 psi, the motor has pretty much had it.
Sorry about the link, in my defense, let me say that I am a techno peasant.
