Hi All,
Just put down a deposit on the new Mercury Verado 300hp V8 for my Outrage 240. Engine should arrive in 6-8 weeks.
I want to get some opinions on mounting and prop selection. I'm trying to avoid changes later and would like to get some good performance on the first try. I realize I probably can't get everything I want. I would like a decent hole shot and a high top end. Any guesses on top end speed (Currently 37mph with the Yama/Merc 225hp)

1) How high should I start with the mounting?
2) What prop? 3 or 4 blade? Size and pitch?

Thanks

This is a good article. On my 1993 23 WA, I run a Powertech OFS4 4 blade and couldn't be happier with the hole shot and cruise efficiency. I would recommend it if you spend most of your time below 3/4 throttle.

Congratulations on the new purchase - that engine is sweet! I assume by now you’ve received, installed it and run it. How has it performed compared to what you had previously?

But my main question is how did you get the engine that fast ? I have been checking in on it for a few months with different dealers, and I’m always told it’s 12 to 18 months out to get one! My 240 Outrage is a 2007 with twin Verado 150s that are not in good shape.

Thanks.

Still waiting on the engine. My installer said it would be 6 - 8 weeks for arrival of the engine from the time I plunked down the hefty deposit. I still do not have it yet. I am patiently waiting... In the meantime, the installer removed my old engine and I have since sold it (he removed it despite me asking him not to) . I've got a boat with no engine and fishing season is a week away on the Chesapeake.

I hope to have the engine soon. In the meantime the Montauk and 13 will have to suffice.

I will post numbers once I get it launched.

Thanks for the update, and sorry to hear you are still waiting. Merc told the dealer I am working with that putting down the deposit could help cut the time to get the 300, which would be nice, but if the stated wait is 12-18 months I wonder how much effect the deposit has if any. Do you mind me asking where you ordered yours? (I didnt see a private message function on this site). I am in Maryland too and looking forward to fishing. Glad you have some backup boat options. Thanks.

I also have heard the order time on these new V-6 and V-8 Mercs is long. They can't make them fast enough to meet huge demand, particularly from the boat builders who demand preference or they can't move boats. You can image how many Boston Whaler is needing alone.
The new Merc V8 will blow the doors off that old Yamaha 225 V-6. Looking at some of Whaler's performance figures, I would say you should get 48-50 MPH. They are cool looking machines. I have seen several on the water in SE Florida this winter season.

The ONLY prop to buy is the Mercury Enertia, which is what Whaler also recommends, maybe somewhere in the range of 18-19" pitch? Go to Mercurymarine.com and use their prop selector for detailed information and selection.

As for mounting height, I would go one hole up from the mounting position the factory used for the 225.

Larry - You recommend 1 hole up from factory position. What is the factory position for the 225?

Aside - Regarding the video, I was told never to rev an outboard running on muffs higher than 1k due to insufficient cooling water.

Tdigitee,
My marina is Skip Bennett Marine just outside of Annapolis. I had a full electronic update - they pulled out pretty much everything and replaced it with Simrad radar, VHF, chart plotters, etc. Apparently, the new Mercury engines play very nicely with Simrad, so I opted for this route. I jumped at the opportunity when I heard the engine build time wasn't very long.

I'll post as soon as the engine comes in. I really hope that it is not 12-18 months - or else I will be seriously pissed. I would have just kept my old engine which is now long gone.

Thank you for the info. I also upgraded my electronics a year ago once the original Northstar system stopped working. Hope the engine shows up soon - will be interested to hear how it does for you since we have similar boats and I may not be far behind you ordering that engine. Enjoy and good luck with fishing this season.

Mb466,
Did you get your engine? I am thinking about putting down a deposit on one soon.

Still waiting. I'll call on Monday again. They said I was "Damn Close" to getting it a few weeks ago, whatever that means. At this point, my weekends are tied up until Mid June, so I couldn't use it if I wanted to.

I'll keep you posted when it arrives with pictures.

Well, the marina has begun installing the new steering system in preparation of the engine arriving very shortly. They say it should be in the water by June 14th. The engine hasn't arrived yet, but they truly believe it will be here and installed by then.

I decided to get all new analog gauges with a digital converter so I don't have non working gauges on the dash. All of the digital data should show up on the new SIMRAD systems.

I'm getting excited.

New engine has arrived and is mounted now. They are working on rigging it and looking at prop testing early this week. Should be ready by next weekend.

I think it took about 12 weeks to arrive - not the 12 months that others have said.

So preliminary numbers are in. They have tried 2 props and have moved the engine up one hole. Top speed was 42mph. (old top speed was 37 with the Yamma/merc 225)
They plan to raise it 1 more hole and try yet another prop.
I'll get some pics once they finish doing a hardcore compounding and possibly a wet sanding to bring back the gel coat shine. I still haven't seen it yet.

Curious, what props are you trying.

Here are some pics. I stopped by the Marina after they were closed, just to take a peek. Haven't had a chance to talk to the marina. The engine in HUGE! it must be 7 feet tall or more!

They are still detailing it. I'll have it launched next weekend.

Here's my new Father's Day present:

Was able to sell both the 1984 Montauk and the 1976 13" whalers in a week at my desired price. Gotta love whalers!
