i know the prop should be taken off of the shaft once a year.
i just picked up a old whaler with a 115 merc. the prop will not come off when i pull on it. it is a stainless prop. is this common and what should i do?

You should look for a prop / gear puller which could be located at must marine repair shops. Outside of that your are using a hammer and block of wood which it a fast way to bend one of your blades out of pitch if you miss the wood.

Most of all the autoparts stores around me will rent or loan gear pullers. Start with the autoparts and if you can not find anything head to the Marine Repair but like anything if a boat it will be more expensive there.

I'm not sure if you are talking about a stainless prop or the stainless steering wheel...

I beleive you are refering to the prop right? Does your gear puller have a place to hammer against like these do?

Either way it will take some whacking. Take a couple whacks and then tighten the trust bolt. Repeat till it pops off.

anthony,

A certified mechanic is probably OK... I wouldn't want just any old mechanic putting a torch to my prop and prop shaft though....

Anthony,

The torch is an acceptable process for removal however make sure and have your seals for the out put shaft replaced on the lower unit.

sounds like you may need to rebuild the lower unit (to replace the seals) if you heat it. If you can take your time you can try PB Blaster and a puller over a period of days or at least a week (or more). Tilt the motor up. spray the PB blaster around the shaft and the prop. Tap the shaft with a mallet (tapping helps the liquid penetrate). then try the puller. If it doesn't come out. Spray then tap. Let it sit then try the next day. Repeat every day until it finally comes out.

I agree, try Henry's method before resorting to heat. I think using a intense heat source like a torch near rubber seals should be a last resort. Good luck, stick with it and you'll get it free....
