I have a 1992 17' Montauk that I repowered with a 1989 90 hp Yamaha. After all of the restoration work I have done to the hull and the motor it finally hit the water today. The motor is mounted two holes up and is turning a black painted stainless 13"x19p Yamaha prop. Trimmed all the way down it turns 4800 rpms at 35 mph. When I trim it up I get it up to 5000 rpms and 40 mph. Could I see better results with a different and better prop or is this what I should expect? Thanks

H-

I think your mounting height is correct.

Your prop is close but not the correct size. It is slightly too much pitch. This is often called being overpropped.

The member recommendations for your boat and engine models include:

13" x 17" Yamaha Painted Stainless Steel
13-1/4" x 16" Yamaha Performance Series
13-1/4" x 15" Turbo 1 4.25

As you can see the sizes are different due to the prop models having different blade geometry.

If you drop down 1" in size in the same model of prop, you will gain the appropriate rpm's at WOT. The WOT range is 4500-5500 for the engine.

The Yamaha painted stainless prop is a good prop and less expensive than the Performance series.

I had the same engine/prop on my 1987 Montauk. WOT was 43 @5300 running light and solo.

Thanks Phil, thats what I was thinking. I have a Turbo prop on my 15' and I really like it. Also, the local prop dealer in my area will let me test out propellers to make sure his customers get the right one.
