i recently sold my 13 sport and purchased a 1995 Dauntless 15 and powered it with a 2018 Mercury 4 stroke 60 HP command thrust
i enjoy small whalers that i can use in shallow waters for clamming and fishing, i loved my 13 but was looking for something with a little higher of a gunnel, the 15 dauntless is perfect as it gives me the center console and bit more beefy but still a skiff feel that i can beach or push off a sandbar.... heres the problem
ive tried countless props and the boat is just a dog getting on plane and barley hits 30 mph with one person in it, i went with a 60hp because many threads and Boston Whaler themselves did not suggest anything *heavier with this boat, a 4 stroke 90hp would have caused issues with the self bailing scuppers on this model
i have a 3 blade 13p aluminum black max on it now with a whale tail and a manual jack plate
has anyone on here re-powered the same boat with any luck?
I have not done the same boat but my 15 with 60HP Big Foot(Command Thrust) is a dog too. What is your WOT rpm you must be over max?
I would start with changong to a SS prop (I know expensive) as they give better performance. I use a 3 bladed Vengeance for all around running and a 4 bladed prop when pulling a tube. The Mercury Vengeance P/N 48-17314 is 17" with 14 pitch.
The 4 bladed is 15" with 13 pitch, and is 4-5 mph slower at WOT, but hole shot is slightly better.
I can run both at 5950 rpm with 550lbs crew/equip weight getting 36+ and 30-31 mph respectively.
For what it's worth I have the exact same engine on my 1977 Montauk 17. I tried a few different props and ended up with the 3 blade stainless Vengeance 48-17314 14 pitch.
At 5500 RPM WOT I am at 32 MPH with 3 adults, 20 gallons of fuel and gear.
