I am having 2 separate issues with my outboard...
1. during tubing at around 5000 rpm, twice, the motor automatically will trim/tilt all the way up and out of the water. I have to shut her down quick. No response. Wait a minute, then tilt down and back in the water, restart and go. Some have mentioned an issue with the Relays. Has anyone else experienced this?
2. 4th of July. About 95ยบ out. Tubing for about 45 minutes straight. Put boat in neutral to change tube riders. Stalled. Would not restart. Even with gears disengaged and forwarded RPMS. Got towed in. Of course at boat ramp, it started again. Got her home and started first try in neutral. I'm told these motors can be difficult to start when warm. Has anyone else experienced this?
A random tilt up or down condition is typically a bad trim switch either the cowl mounted switch or the trim switch at the helm. If you have the same vintage binnacle mount with the trim switch in the throttle handle they were notorious for getting water in them and shorting up or down. This is from experience not conjecture. The engine issue with shutting off and restarting later after cooling down is typically a bad stator. Determine if your engine has a either the black or blue stator under the flywheel, which would be original.Have the stator tested by a shop to determine if it is bad.
