My air compressor is squealing on my 2003 Mercury Optimax 135, with 174 hours.
If I put my finger over the brass intake hole, for a second or two, that fits into the flywheel cover the squealing stops, but starts again when I remove my finger. Do you think this is compressor failure? If so can it be rebuilt?
I also discovered that the previous owner jumped the oil tank alarm wires, I assume to keep the alarm quiet instead of replacing the tank. It was full of oil thankfully.
Not sure if they can be rebuilt, but I ignored the squealing last summer, not knowing what it was. I think the mechanic told me that the squealing was the belt slipping on the compressor. It pretty much blew up. Metal all over the place. It was about a $1,500 repair. Don't wait! I was actually relieved as I thought I had blown the motor. I have never heard that kind of noise come out of an outboard when the compressor blew. I was starting to price new 150 HP Mercury. I think a new compressor is about $750.
