How would a 225 Opti perform on a Outrage 1979 v22 ?? Is that the max it should have ?? I have a 1986 Mariner 200 on her now .. Hope to get some feed back !!! I assume It will sip fuel rather than guzzle !!!! Should I be lookin at a 250hp ??

240hp I believe is the max just like the other 22' models... Of course you can put anything you want on it.

I personally think a 200hp is just fine on a 22' but many people do have the 225hp on the transom.

See this article on choices and weights.

I had two engines on my 1979 22' Outrage, a 1979 235 Johnson and a 1986 225 Johnson. Both engines performed very well. I had a 13 1/4 by 21" prop on the 235. It had a reasonable hole shot, but would push the boat about 55 MPH. The 225 was one of the first loop charged models and was rigged with a 13 1/4 by 19" prop. The hole shot was incredibly quick, and it would run about 50 MPH. I had a 1989 200 HP Johnson on my current 22' before I replaced it with a Yamaha 150 HP four stroke. The 200 performed very similar to the 225. My only complaint with the Johnson's, was fuel consumption (other than paint problems). From what I have heard, Opti Max engines are pretty good on fuel consumption, and with the later technology, it should really perform well on that Whaler.

I'm thinking of repowering my '91 22' Outrage with a Yamaha HPDI 200. I'd consider a 4-stroke, but they're either too heavy or I drop to much power from my Yamaha 225. Do you have some performance numbers you can post for you 22' with the Yamaha 150 4-stoke?
Thanks,
Aaron

Aarosa,
I have been very pleased with the Yamaha 150 four stroke for how I use my 22' Outrage. It is rigged with a 14 1/2 x 17 steel prop, gives a very good hole shot with 4 or 5 passengers, and tops out about 45/46 MPH with me and my son in the boat. I mounted it at the highest level on the transom. Most of my use is trolling. I have not tracked fuel usage by gallon, but I estimate the consumption is about 1/3 of the old 1989 200 Johnson. (Note! After my warranty expired during the sixth year, I disconnected the VRO and was premixing oil with the gas. This also affected fuel economy with the old Johnson.) Engine weight is about the same as the 1989 Johnson. Go to the Yamaha website, look at performance bulletins for the 150 four stroke. Although a Whaler is not listed, I used the Edgewater Sentenel 18' 6' as a guage for how the 22' Outrage would perform. A shorter hull, but the weight is about the same and it is a similar hull design. The numbers reflected have been very close to the performance of my 22'. When I purchased the Yamaha in early 2005, the 200 HP E-Tec would have cost about $4000.00 more. The 150 & 175 models were not out yet. Just things to consider. The Yamaha 150 will probably work harder than a 200 HP two stroke getting on a plane and maintaining cruising speeds. Idle/trolling speeds should be a wash. Changing oil/filter once a season has not been a problem. My Yamaha Service Manual recommends changing the timing belt at 5 years, or 1000 hours. Other than that, other maintenance items (e.g. lower gear oil, plugs, etc) are about the same. Either way you go, with today's technology, you should be very happy. The 22' Outrage is rated for 240 HP. I guess you have to decide if you want up to 90 HP in reserve when using your Whaler. I would purchase the motor, which ever you choose, from the most reputable and reliable dealer in your area. Good luck!
