A friend of mine has been borrowing my 13 whaler for the summer and was threatening to keep it. I couldn't let that happen so I found an 11 whaler with with in great condition for $650. The only catch is that it doesn't have a motor. My 13 has a 1984 35hp mercury. I've been wanting to upgrade to something with power trim/tilt. I've found a new outboard my for 13 and am wondering if my 35 would work on the 11. I realize that this is a lot of power, but I'm more concerned with weight as both of us are experienced boaters and not out to win any races.
I know that most people are running 25hp, but does anyone know if my 35 will work? Thanks for the help!

Great boat, great price...Buy it !! 35hp is a LOT of oomph but your friend doesn't have to employ all the hp and the weight diference is negligible between the 25 and 35. Your friend could wait for a different motor or use the 35hp within reason. Either way, get the boat. You can figure out the motor. Paul "Go Zags!"
P.S. ... My wife is getting her PhD at Gonzaga and I spend every summer in the beautiful sate of WA !

Thanks Paul. Gonzaga is a great school as I'm sure you know. Hopefully you have been able to spend some time on Puget Sound. If the two of you have time, I highly recommend taking the Clipper out of Seattle up to Victoria BC. It's a beautiful boat ride up through the San Juans.

We did, by accident ! Missed the ferry schedule out of Anacortes and ended up on on Friday Island by default. Spent 2 nights in a B&B in March, Pretty cheap, (we missed the ferry barf!) & got some great seafood, and saw all kinds of wondwerful critters plus a whale watch trip. Puget Sound is magnificent! I hope you got the boat ! Paul

I also have a whaler 11 and recently posted this same question... but had my eyes on a 40 hp. The responses I got were much more cautious. I'd like to hear how the 35 works out for you if you go that route.
My whaler is a 79 an the data plate says max of 20 hp with steering controls. What year is yours? Do you have the same spec. limit?
BTW, I think you got a great deal on the 11! I paid a lot more and thought I was doing ok.

I'll let you know how the 35hp works out, if I go that route. I may end up keeping the 35 on my 13' and puttinga 25 on the 11'.
