I have a 1993 Johnson 88 SPL 2-stroke on my 1961 16' Nauset.
After it was running rough while cold I pulled the plugs and found water on the right head/bank, but not on the left (V4 motor). These engines have both a head gasket and a water jacket with a gasket, the water jacket sits on top of the cylinder head.
I am worried about snapping bolts on a 24 year old engine, and want to disassemble as little as possible.
Is there any way to determine whether it's the head gasket or water jacket gasket that's bad? Or I do I have to cross my fingers and replace both the head and water jacket gaskets?
The motors runs fine once warm and makes full power, but I'm sure that won't last long with water intrusion.
