propeller turning only at idle speed 1976 Johnson 40 HP sport 13'3"
1976 Johnson 40HP EL on sport 13'3"
Propeller only turns at idle and fast idle-motor races when throttle is increased but prop not turning.
Shear Pin is fine--any ideas?
thanks
Typically, if a prop has a shear pin there is no hub as in modern propellers. I would tend to think that the internal clutch dog or forward gear where the clutch dog engages is worn out/damaged. One way to test the hub or shear pin and eliminate that as an issue would be to check reverse. If you can give throttle in reverse and everything is normal than the hub/shear pin is not the issue and most likely the problem is internal in the gear case. Get out your wallet it's a pricey fix.
Thanks for the input. I will check using reverse and increasing throttle. Regarding prop being "spun" I have an extra prop and will try that also. WhalerNooby mentioned it is likely in the gear case. Motor is 40 years old and still strong so will weigh what to do next after I talk to mechanic.
Thanks again for your input
