Hi all! Been lurking here a while including last year when I bought this motor that is an issue. So I have 2 classic 13' whalers. One I finished restoring last winter. Out of suggestions I went with an evinrude 45hp electric start short shaft, I believe it's an 1984, and had it mounted professionallionally. I should also include it was an electric tilt but the tilt motor was removed. So when I got it out as soon as it would go past an idle it started to pour water out from in between the mounting arms of the motor. I messed with the height up and down and haven't been able to fix the problem. Any solutions or even anyone have an experience with something like that?

Next question is can anyone suggest a motor for my other 13' whaler that's about to be finished and ready for a motor? Mind you both these both are pre 1972 so they are the notched transoms. Thank you in advance for any and all help.
Mike.

First boat I had for myself was a 1965 13 Whaler. Completely stripped it dow , restained the the mahogany seats, Streering box, bow hatch. Put a new cable/pulley steering system on it and re powered with 1982 35 hp Johnson. I was 14 when I did all of this, and the 35 Johnson was great, could get skiers out of the water whether they were adults or not...are you looking for a current motor or an old motor?

(fixed typo in year)

Is the water coming from inside the cover or being spashed up by the mid-section? If from inside, check the cooling hoses.

When you say short shaft, are you saying it is a 15" or 20"? The older 13's take a 15" shaft.

If you can't find a 15" shaft, you can get a just the jackplate (no setback) for the 5" you need.

The water is not coming from inside the motor, it's pouring in totally filling the gap between where the motor sits on the boat and the bottom of the engine cover. I mean, a solid column of water. If I get it on plane it will fill the boat with 3 or 4 inches in 10-15 seconds. In terms of newer or older motors that doesn't really matter. I just want something that fits well with the boat so I don't have issues like this again. I have a 1956 Johnson golden javelin on my 54 old town so older motors don't scare me but I'm also not looking to spend a fortune on a brand new motor.

Can you give us the model number of the 1984 Evinrude 45hp ?
Should be something like E45E???? or thereabouts.

You need to have a 15" short shaft motor for your hull as mentioned above.

Also let us know how high the motor is mounted.

Right now it is shrinkwrapped but it's time to get that off anyway so I will get the model number, some measurents and if I can figure out how to post them some pictures in the next day or or 2. I appreciate everyone's input and can use all I can get. Even the guy I had mount the motor was at a loss and he's done a tone of these, says he's never seen anything like it. I'm hoping someone here has. Thanks again.
Mike.
