Does anyone have any experience/opinions concerning the new 30-40hp Merc 4 strokes? A 13' owner I know is cogitating this purchase. Thanks, Paul

i wonder how many people would take the mercury on the back of that new whaler if they had a choice. i think not many (surely not me). my opinion is that japanese technology is superior. cars are a perfect example. just my opinion (since you asked). i'd shop around and look for online reviews. enjoy the hunt. mike

Many of the reviews/forums mention that many of the Mercs' powerheads are Japanese mfgd and that Merc mfgs the lower extremities(???) Not very much info out yet that I have been able to find since the motors are fairly new. I think he likes the way the black motor looks on his transom. Maybe he will go a shade lighter and look at the Yamahopper 40. Thanks! Paul

Paul,
Don't overlook the Nissan/Tohatsu as a possible choice. I'm happy with my TLDI which is a 2 stroke.

Thanks Mike! A LOT of crabbers down here use the Tohatsu/Nissan's on their boats and they say they are bulletproof. I will pass it on. Paul

The dimensions for the powerheads on the 25-30 hp 4 stroke Merc and Tohatsu are the same. Coincidence?? Paul

All small Mercurys are made in China at a plant jointly operated by Mercury and Tohatsu.

The smaller Tohatsu/Nissan TLDI motors use the same technology as the Merc Optimax motors.
