Hello, I am totally conflicted. I recently moved to Hawaii and I am looking to buy my first boat. For those of you who have not lived in Hawaii before, please understand that there is probably a 4-6k plus up on prices here. I started this search thinking about getting a boat that I could fly fish off of, my preferred method. Of course Hawaii is not known for its fly fishing but I think that is largely due to its meat hunter traditions. After two months of looking I have narrowed my decision down to two boats. An 2008 Montauk 190 with a 115 Merc 4 stroke, or an 2002 Outrage 210 with 200 Yamaha 4 stroke (130) hours.
The Montauk will probably run me about 42k with a T-top, a water/fuel seperator, etc. The Outrage is going for 33k with a very nice T-top, full pads, live bait well, fresh water shower. Clearly the Outrage is a pretty good deal. However it has been sitting in the water for the last 4 years with very little use. The bilge pump does not work, it needs a water/fuel filter, and it currenly has either water in the fuel or clogged injectors since it is not running very well. the local dealer says the injectors are firing and it has good compression.
So to my dilema. The Outrage probably is a better deal and with a little care I could probably sell it for more than I paid for it in a couple of years (I am in the Marines and will probably move in 2-3 years). But the small electrcal problems, the current engine issues, and the fact that I was really looking for a fly fishing platform make me think the Montauk would suit me better. Please keep in mind that a "calm" day here in Hawaii is 10-15mph winds and 3-6 ft seas.
Any opinions greatly welcomed. Mahalo

personally i would go for the turn key boat. there is nothing worse than trying to get problems fixed when you are ready to go fishing. a boat sitting on salt water is a death trap, and 4 years is rough. (i live in so cal and see boats rotting on the bouys in newport, long beach, huntington, & santa monica harbors, etc) it's hard to put a price on convienence. and if you are entertaining the pricer boat and can afford it, get it and rest assured there will be no problems. just my opinion. others will argue to the death that 4 years on salt water is no big deal. cruise newport harbor in so cal and see all the SCHOCK Boat whalers rotting. Millions of dollars. It is truly sad. Go new. Mike
ps i bought my 88 montauk from a guy in Vegas 1 year ago. the boat had NEVER been in the salt. It lived a few days on tahoe and mead. then it sat in a garage. even with glut of boats here to choose from, i would resist as much as possible to get a boat sitting in salt. if i could afford new, it's a no brainer.

As an owner of a Montauk 17 here in South Florida,I can tell you that it is the perfect boat for running around in fairly calm and shallow waters. However, 3-6 foot seas in a Montauk, I would think even in a 19, will beat you to death. Look for something else with a deeper V.

you will indeed take more of a beating. there are other alternatives to "overpriced" new(er) whalers. Makos, edgewaters, etc. 40k+ is still a lot and could find a suitable alternative. good luck.

Well there arent any alternatives here in Hawaii. There is a Proline dealer but he charges as much for the prolines as the whaler dealer does for a comparable boats. The whaler dealer is bringing in Sea Fox's but I hear they arent worth it. Take a look at Hawaii craigslist to get a feeling for what I am dealing with. 88 Outrages with twin 40's,, 20k. 1990 Seacraft with twin Johnson 115's 42k.
My thoughts are now to use the boat here in Kaneohe bay, on the leeward side of the island and over here on windward on calmer days.
"sleeping on it" didnt help... who ever thought that was a good idea

mrt10x,
Always a tough decision.
I would be inclined to go for the Outrage on 1 condition.... That they got the engine running and inspected by a mechanic of your choice.....
Once the engine is running, then if you are mechanically inclined, you should be able to fix the other minor problems....
A 2002 Yamaha 200 with 130 hours on it should not be that bad.... But, have a mechanic check it out and get it running properly before you buy....

Thank Joe, i think that is the plan. Went down and looked at both boats again today, the 210 is the way to go as long as the enigine is fixed. The mechanics at the local BW dealership gave it a clean bill of health off of the computer, but they refered me to someone else out in town for the rest. They are just to busy with the boats they sell. No biggie their reputation is not all that great. I think if I get orders out of here in 18 months, short tour, the Outrage will be easy to offload for what I paid or even more.

I have a 17 Montauk and must say I love the boat but in a few years will be selling it and moving up to an Outrage. Bigger and better ride are the main reasons. My Montauk does not like the rough water and the kids get spooked when slamming over a 2-3 ft chop.

Well the boat is running great. Took it out on Sat on Kaneohe Bay and she jumped right on plane and hit 44mph no problem. Took her out the channel in 20mph trade winds and about 3-5ft swells and stayed very dry at around 18-20mph. Took a few hard pounds but not a drop of water. Guess I bought a boat . MT
