I just picked a "new to me" Whaler, it appears in good shape and the usual oxy gel coat dirt etc. Would anyone have comments about what to look for in the area of hidden problems. Oh, I would like to thank the Webmasters here, this is a nice site, I have learned alot since registering.

One of the most important areas to check first in my opinon is the thru-hull drains.
1. Is there any visual weeping water stains from any of these drains?
2. Use a flashlight and look inside these drains for cracks or splits.
3. Run your finger in these drains to feel for any cracks etc. (don't cut yourself if there are any)
4. Replace the drains if any or the above are found to be true.
Other than that, any weepage from anything else on the boat, including the engine mounting holes, is an indication of water intrusion. Check them out closely.
Because your 15 is bottom painted, an even more thorough bottom inspection is in order. Bottom paint tends to hide gel/minor glass damage. I suggest crawling under there with a flash light and run your hand over the main keel and follow that with the strakes etc. If you don't find any depressions, small holes, or peeling, you're all set. If you do, its time to check for further damage.
