I am repowering my boat and am looking for suggestions on engine size. It has a 40HP Force on it that is now an unwieldy anchor (this is another story). I operate on the upper Missouri River with lots of sand bars so I am looking for the lightest, shallowest draft, yet still with enough power to overcome a 6 knot current. I always felt that the 40 HP was almost two much for the boat, especially with a couple of kids getting to the driving age.

I am thinking about something in the 25-30HP range with a short shaft. Also, does anyone have any comments on the varioius brands?

Thanks.

I have a 1998 30hp Johnson on my 86 13. It seems like a perfect match. My motor lacks power tilt and trim and I really wish I had it, other than that its perfect!

I can't remember, does that '73 have a 15" or 20" transom? I know Nissan/'Tohatsu make the short shaft motors. Like Scott said, the pt&t is really helpfun on the 13.

The transom appears to measure 21" from top to bottom.

Adam,
That makes it a long shaft and you have many choices available to you. I recommend going to engine manufacturers' websites to see what's available. Most of the new engines are good. Emissions might be your major concern but it's hard to find a bad motor these days.

The 40hp Yamaha is an excellant choice. I am very happy with mine.
