17 Outrage I VS. Montauk and 18 Outrage

With the sale of my 22' Outrage I am back looking for something to replace it. On the list are a 17 Montauk, 17 Outrage I (built till 1995) not the Outrage II and maybe an 18 Outrage. I had the 17 Montauk for 10 years in our family so I have a lot of hours on that boat and truly know and understand it's capabilities. I also know it's weaknesses. I love it could be towed behind a mid size car or small SUV with ease. It could be launched by one person and stored in my garage. It also could beat you up on a choppy day.
The 18 offers the built in fuel tank more room and a much improved ride of the V Hull. However, I really would still need my fullsize truck to haul the boat around. I would like to get rid of the truck and something smaller and better on fuel.
The 17 Outrage I seems to be the perfect answer to the equation. A bit smaller than the 18 Outrage, less weight (?) than the 18, and a better ride than the Montauk with a built in fuel tank.
I am looking for thoughts on the 17 Outrage I from people who have actual real life experience with the hull, owned, and operated this hull and how it compares to a Montauk and 18 Outrage.

Hi Jeff,
Any reason you would rule out a 17 ft outrage II? I realize its not a classic design. If I were to make a change it would be this one I almost went for one like this 2 seasons ago, to pricey and it was to far. I would be interested in any comments.

Jon, I have to have a classic. The Outrage II might be a bit more money and function better but being a designer the aesthetics play a huge role in that decision. I just like the looks better.

I wanted to move up from my Montauk that I owned for 15 years.
I purchased a 1997 Outrage 17' II.

I thought about the Outrage 17' I but the price was very close to the Outrage 18'. At least the ones I saw for sale. There also isn't any teak on this model but that can be an asset if you don't want to take care of the teak.
There are a couple people here that own the Outrage 17' I model. Maybe they can fill you in on more details.

Renzo has the early model with the quarter storage boxes instead of quarter seats. He also added a teak dash panel.

I ran into a really nice 17 Outrage last time I had the 22 out on Lake St Clair. After looking it over at the gas dock I really liked it. Thought it was a boat that could be hauled and handled like a Montauk with the ride of an 18. I have spend the past 2 weeks looking for images of 17 outrages and have thought as much as I like the quarter boxes, the later years with the seats would probably be the better option.
I have written both Phil and Robert Dyer in the past days as they both have the stern seat models. I have not heard back yet.

Maybe I am missing something but the Outrage 17 only weights 200 pounds less than the classic 18 and it's 15 inches shorter. I admit it has nice things like a live well, assuming you need that but it has half the size fuel tank the Classic 18 Outrage has.
I would think that going for either would require a V6 and minimum of 3500 pounds tow capacity.

Jeff - check your pm's - I sent you my email address so I can send you some photos.
I just (2 weeks ago) purchased a 1996 Outrage II with a 98 150 Johnson on the back. The seller was very patient with me being new to the Whaler ins and outs.
We use it as a family cruiser and love it. I have only a limited experience with the other models you are looking at.

Skip thanks I got the PM. I have seen the 17 Outrage II in person and it really is not the boat I want. I will say though I am in Grand Haven often and would love to see yours in person on the water.

I am with Kamie on this one.
I find it really easy to put my outrage in the water by myself.
There is very little side-to-side action on the outrage because of the 7.5-foot beam.
I am a big guy and Montauks and I don't mix well together especially if I have a friend.
Will keep my eye out for you.

You might even concider a V20. Mine only weighs 1500 lbs (or 1650 depending where you look). I have a single axle trailer that only weighs 650 lbs. I pull it out of the water with a Escape Hybrid and around town no problem.
It also has a little less V than a 18 or 22 so it gets up on plane easier and gets better gas mileage.
With your eye, I'm sure you'll end up with a beauty in any case.

I just bought (August 22) a 1995 Outrage, 17' with a 1995 Evinrude 115hp. It is replacing a 1994 Grady White Explorer 246G, with a 1994 Yamaha 225. I sold the Grady on CraigsList, and also bought the Outrage there. Started by going to all the coastal cities in FL, and found the Outrage in Daytona. Sold the Grady in Wilmington (where I currently live.)
My first experience with Whalers. Haven't had it out yet, except for the test ride. Been doing a lot of deep cleaning and making up for some "deferred" maintenance, like replacing the zincs and one of the scupper drains. I now boat mostly on the NE Cape Fear river, the Cape Fear river, and the Intracoastal Waterway; will go a few miles out into the ocean, but no where near where I used to go in the Grady.
The Grady (over two tons with a full load of fuel, and the engine and two passengers) got 1.6 miles to the gallon; I am hoping for about 5-6 mpg with the Outrage/Evinrude.
Any suggestions for good parts stores for the Outrage? Any good sites for the old Evinrude?

I am looking on ebay for a kicker engine for the Outrage. Need some experienced help with the size (hp) of the engine. Any suggestions?

That motor is not old for an outboard.
You can purchase any parts you need from your local Evinrude dealer.
You can also look up any parts you need on (Bombardier) BRP Online Parts Catalog.[
