My dad has one for his under-deck tank 20 outrage, but for an external, is there a need for that clumsy, bulky, no-place-to-put seperator? Any water in the gas would just get burned up. I know from experience that my dad's tank would get water seepage from the sender cap on top and just being old. I've pumped over 1/2 gallon of water from that then all ran fine. Thanks. Mike
It is always a GOOD idea to have an external fuel/water separator... but in my opinion, not absolutely necessary.
However, it is much easier to get water out of an above deck external tank than it is a built-in internal tank.
I never had a fuel/water separator on my Montauk that I owned for 15 years. I never had a problem.
As long as you are assured of getting good gas and keep the tank(s) full over winter, you shouldn't have any problems by not having a fuel/water separator....
Again, it is still a good idea to have one though...
I have a Montauk that I just installed a fuel/water separator on. In my opinion it is better to err on the side of caution. I can tell you that we all invest a lot of time and money into our boats and if there is some good and no bad that can result from the installing a separator, then I'm all for it.
