How long is your anchor chain? Or how long should it be?

I've heard that 20' is a good length so it lays on the bottom and pulls the anchor into the bottom. Is this too much? Rope and chain packages on sites have about 6' of chain. This sounds like too little. I was thinking more like 10-12'. Thanks. Mike

I have 6 feet of chain for my 22. Also, here is what you need to figure for your line length. The standard to go by is 8:1. So for every foot of water depth you need 8' for line.

My anchor chain is 6 feet, and works just fine.

I'm sure you will get MANY different opinions on this. To me a lot depends on the type of bottom you want to anchor in and the depth. If there are a lot of rocks you may want more to keep the rocks from chafing and breaking your rope. The larger the rocks, the more chain you may want. I don't see what size boat you have. With my 13' I don't use any chain at all and anchor in mud or sand. I have a really light danforth type anchor and if I let out enough rope I don't have any troubles. Chain would be a better option for me but I get by like it is. For a larger boat chain is more important to get a good bite.
