Shortening shaft on a 1993 9.9 Evinrude

Member Personal Page Posts: 25 Comments: 1 Joined: 04/02/05	I believe it is. All you should need to do is get the shorter drive shaft and take out the extended section. That is the way it was done on the old ones. You might want to replace the water pump while you have it apart.

Member Personal Page Posts: 200 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/01/05	I'll update this myself in case other folks are curious. First of all it's a 1993, sold to me as a 1990 when I bought the Outrage. The colours matched so I didn't think much of it. I've discovered this by visiting Evinrude's website and entering the model number. They have a wealth of information on the older models now, with all the parts diagrams and codes so you know what to order. Check it out. The concern is, how was my motor born. If it was born as a short shaft I merely need to remove the 5 inch extension someone installed later in life. If it was born as a long shaft I have a problem. Or so I'm told. It can still be done, it's just quite a bit more costly and more labour intensive. $$$$ It's 3 hours away and I've not had time to check yet but I'll let you know. E10R[color=red]L[/color]ETM E- Evinrude 10 - 9.9 hp R - rope/pull start [color=red]L - 20" shaft[/color] E - ??? can't be electric on my motor TM - model year 1993 Except for the E it all seems to line up. Perfect. Well, sort of perfect. Means it was born as a longer shaft and I want a 15inch shaft. I'll assume this for now and research the conversion prices. I did get a quote of 1 hour labour assuming this situation. Doesn't sound too bad does it? You really have to shake your head though if this code break down is correct for a 1993 motor. 2 Canadian dealers and one US dealer couldn't tell me this in the last week when I gave them the model number. This is a guess. "M" stands for Michigan.. "B" stands for Britian.. I don't have a clue about the rest. The year is the 2nd and the 3rd from the last digits... ET, this is not Extra Terrestial.... For the Model year, OMC/Bombardier uses the word INTRODUCES which can be translated to numbers 1 through 0 E = 9 (E is the 9th letter in the word INTRODUCES T = 3 (T is the 3rd letter in the word INTRODUCES So, you have a 1993 model Evinrude, 10hp, Rope Start, Long Shaft (20 inch) I hope this helps along with the rest of the great info above. From this great info we're pretty sure I have a long shaft, probably 20" and it was born this way. After reading this last last night I've priced the parts and in Detroit they're $172.00 US plus maybe a few minor extras. One Dealer up here has quoted $263.00 CAN all in. Most of this is for the short drive shaft. ($ 154. US). There's a water tube that can be cut instead of replaced and I forget the other smaller parts. Then plus labour $75 US or $85 CAN for the hour. I'm assuming, and I think the dealers are too, there is that 5 inch piece in the outer casing that can simply be removed. (I truly hope you need glasses Jeff.) If not, I may be in for an even bigger hit I think. Neither of the two dealers have mentioned it so far though. My own dealer has not responded as they are away at an annual end of season Marina Operators Ass. meeting this week and they have the boat so we'll see what they say next week. A little more than I'd hoped but not too bad. This 9.9 kicker is in immaculate shape guys. A little scratched on the outside but we don't think it's hardly been used. The prop is original and has narry a mark on it and I only keep it there for safety concerns. Sooo.... As mentioned earlier my theory is to put it on a Zodiac type inflatable and tow it, which I've done a lot of many years ago. Should I get into some snotty weather where this is a concern I can always deflate it to the size of a large suitcase and put the motor on a transom bracket that I'll keep there for this reason. This all works for trailering too. These boats weigh about 80#'s plus the extra 5 gal fuel tank and a few extra safety items. I think the kids will have a blast when we're camping, it'll be easier for the one kid and I to take off for a little fishing when camping then leave the "mothership" where it is, and the big thing is to teach them how to handle boats and the responsibility that goes with them. And who of us wouldn't have thought we'd died and gone to heaven when we were 12 & 14 having something like this to use. Thanks for all the help guys. I really wasn't looking forward to a 7 hour round trip to the boat on roads that have closed due to snow twice in the last week. Merry Christmas.
