Restoring a 1989 vintage 22 Revenge (hope to download some pictures later for the Photo Galleries). The boat still has the original 1989 175 Evinrude VRO, with only 220 hrs. on the meter. Nevertheless, the engine has a rather classic fuel consumption and i feel that the boat is a bit underpowered. I measure 35 (nautical) MPH on the GPS.
Questions:
1. What is the suggestion regarding power of new engine? I lean towards a 60 degree 200 e-tec.
2. With current engine i think the boat is not responding very well to trim and seem a bit nose heavy. Should I go for a heavier engine than the 200 e-tec. I love the hole shot of 2-strokes and use a 15 hp kicker for trolling.
3. What improvement (percent) can I expect in mileage if replacing with 200e-tec?
The E-Tec 225 weighs 97 pounds more than the 200 model but still might be perfect to offset the extra bow weight of the Revenge.... But, you also have the kicker...
I think either one you choose is fine.
Nobody ever complains about not *enough* weight in the stern of the classic 22. If you had trouble trimming your boat, the propeller was probably not optimized, that's all.
ANY 200 or 225 HP motor made today will be an excellent choice for the Revenge 22 Walk Through. I would not use less than 200 HP nor would I recommend overpowering it; it doesn't need it.
Regardless of what you repower with, you will see some increased fuel mileage but it is not as if you are going to double your fuel mileage. The greatest benefit of a new motor will be reduced noise and smoke, easier starting and reliability.
Thanks for the replies. Maybe Andy Grer/Duf can share their experiences on fuel economy on their E-tec's?
The 1989 VRO still only has spprox 230 hrs on the meter and for the 30,000 dollars (this is Norway the most expensive country in the world!) a new 200 e-tec costs a can burn a lot of gasoline. (Still Norway, fule price is more than 2 dollars per liter!!!!!)
