I am shopping for a prop for my 1984 Outrage 20 with a 1984 Johnson 185 hp.
My Outrage is the one with the removable bench/storage lockers in the bow.
Can you guys help me decide what would be a good all around prop for my boat?

Art,

let all know what you are starting out with. Prop, size, is it stainless? Max RPM trimmed out, and performance goal. I like to be able to run at upper end of the RPM range for best all around operation. Especially for water sports.

14-1/2" x 19" OMC/BRP SST/Viper, 14-1/4" x 17" Stiletto Advantage II, 14" x 19" Mercury Offshore/VenSura or 14" x 19" Mercury Laser II.

Thanks guys,

I took my old prop in to have a new hub installed. It's a 14.5 x 19 stainless 3 blade.

I decided to mess with the prop I have for a while and get the RPM data. I'll use a GPS and mess with the trim settings for top speed and to see what the RPM is at WOT.

One thing though, I would like a prop that works well in the 3000 - 4000 RPM area. My motor is old and it probably isn't wise to run it wide open very much.

I did some testing today and quickest I could go was 41 mph @ 5200 RPM with the old 14.5 X 19 stainless prop.

Only 41 MPH at 5200 RPM surprises me a bit. I would expect the boat to be faster than that. With the 19" pitch prop your propeller slip is a very high 18.5 percent, higher than an OMC SST prop should be. Something is amiss here.

Are you sure you are measuring speed in MPH and not knots?

Is your boat heavily loaded with gear and options? Is the bottom bottom painted? Is the bottom clean? Waterlogged?

My boat is bottom painted and it isn't smooth at all.

I used a GPS and MPH.

I just spayed my carbs with Sea Foam and am about to put in new plugs.

41 MPH felt pretty fast to me. But, I assumed it would do upper 40s even with ugly bottom paint.

This is my first boat aside from my gf's 13. So, I really don't know what to expect.
I get the feeling the prop doesn't bite well enough when I take off though.

What do you think of the Rebel prop Tom? I really am not looking to run this thing at top speed much.

I went out thru the inlet into the ocean today and I was afraid to even get on plane. It was my first time in the ocean in my boat.

Well, the Sea foam and spark plugs certainly helped starting and Idleing, but my top speed only went up to 42 mph.

I'm finally having a blast with this boat. I had a motorcycle accident a couple months ago and up til now, I haven't had it in me to bounce my broken body around.

Hi Arthur, How's your engine height on the transom? The previous owner of my new boat had it for 8 years and all that time the engine was too low on the transom both robbing speed and power (the tell tale spray was evident the first time out...). You may have seen this post http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...ad_id=1990 but take a look as it has great pic's by Jeff on where proper engine height should be. Could be a factor in your speed issue? Glad you're feeling well enough to get out and have some fun!
Dave

Thanks Derwd24,

I'll have to take a look at that. I did notice a lot of water splashing around near the transum. I don't think it has an exsessive roster tail, but I see water splashing like something is dragging in the water at the bottom of the transom and trowing water around by the motor.
