I am buying a 1989 Montauk that has a new helm seat but there is no seat back or hardware. Boston Whaler only sells the entire seat and Halls will sell the back. But where can I find the ss tubing and fittings to attach the back to the seat? I could also make the wooden back but am not so sure about bending the tubing and attaching the whole thing securely to the seat. Thanks.

i recently saw a couple of RPS's on ebay. it might be easier to buy a whole new seat and sell your current seat for parts.

The original tubing isn't bent it is welded at a square 90 degree angle.

jaemrich,
I thought about buying the entire seat but BW wants $1,000 plus $150 freight for one. I'll find one and copy the parts and have them bent or welded before I do that. I can't imagine that a bottom even with the new cushion would bring enough to make it worth while.
I'll keep looking. It would be nice to find photos of the parts if anyone has them?

Js,
Look around on our site and you will find what you seek.
There are drawings for the RPS seatback in the downloads section.
Photos of the RPS seat back are in the Project Gallery section.

Good Luck with your new Whaler.

I hear you on that. i would sit on a 5 gallon bucket before shelling out that kind of green for seat.
keep your eye out - last week there was a whole RPS on ebay (for less than 1G).
I just saw the RPS seat back on ebay for $350

All you would need is the s/s bars and some way to attach them to the RPS back.
good luck

Thanks all,
I downloaded the diagram for the seat back and will start making one as soon as the boat arrives (assuming there are some rainy days).

CapJs,
I've got a 16'-7 whaler, just put a new console in her no seating for capt as yet. The more i use her without the seat the more i am liking the space, and it pretty touch sitting as you pound through the waves.
Dont wait for a seat if thats all you need, splash her and enjoy the rest of the summer. Worry about a seat over the long winter.

drandlett,
The dealer is doing a few minor repairs to the hull but the boat is going into the water at the first opportunity. I will not wait for a seat back since the seat base is fine and I can stand if necessary. I'll probably wait until fall or winter to make the new seat unless I find one at a great price in the meantime.
I'm "chompin at the bit" to get her in the water. Hopefully it won't be more than another week. They are taking pictures of the repair as they proceed and it's almost done.
