I have a '72 13' that my Pop left me. Great boat! Lots of childhood memories. Well, my aunt bought me a new 40hp Mercury 4-stroke for my birthday.......

.....long story short, the motor was supposed to be in last Friday. The dealer is now telling me it will be the end of August before it comes in!!! He originally told me 10 days!

I called today, told him what I thought. He offered me a 40hp Yamaha. I don't know a thing about this stuff.

What do YOU ALL think? (other than the fact that my aunt spoils me)

Mercury makes a lot of parts for Yamaha and Yamaha makes a lot of parts for Mercury...

Either one is a good engine...

Find out which one will offer the best service in your area and go with that one. Both are excellent motors.

i think 3 people said the etec would be 2 heavy on this forum. the dry weight of the etec 40hp is like 250lbs and the yamaha is 189lbs. the yamaha is a 4stroke

Not that it is a big deal, but I think the ETEC is 240# and the Yamaha 196#......44# should not make a lot of difference

I've mentioned it before on other threads so I had not chimed in here yet but the Tohatsu/Nissan 40 tldi is 208 lbs. with ptt. I've had mine since the early spring and it performs great! If I don't have anyone sitting in the front I put my fuel tank forward and the balance is very doable.

Well, I thought I'd update everyone. I want to thank y'all for the advice/opinions.....

since the short shaft is such a pain, i am having the transom built up to accept a standard. i am going w/ the 40 hp merc + power tilt/trim. going to cost me an extra $900 though.

i'll let you know how it goes
