having a problem with the reverse. It seems the cable might be kinked or something. I nearly have to slam down lever control so the reverse moves into a faster gear. What are your thoughts on this one?
Thanks,
Key-z

The issue could be caused because of a binnicle control binding up, the throttle or shift cables being bound or seized, or your lower unit saying a final good bye. I would start be disconnecting everything. Then one by one go through each item. Start by checking the Binnicle control and make sure it moves freely. Next start pulling the throttle and shift cables to check their movement. Finally move the shift linkage on the motor. All should move freely since they are not longer connected. If they all move fine I would start looking into your lower unit.
If it is a Yamaha I would bet you that your shift linkage in the lower unit is rusted out. This is a very common issue.

The engine is a 1997 evinrude 150 Ocean pro.
I'll check akk the cables that are exposed. I just hope it's not kinked under the floor.

One easy way to check is to pop the engine cover and watch the shift linkage as you go from neutral to fwd, back, and then into reverse. Should all be smooth, similar movements on the linkage. If it is, start it up and do the same. If it's good, the problem lies outside the cables and control...
Another thought... Has the lower unit been off recently for a new water pump or other reason? We sent ours out to have some skeg work done, and in the process the shift rod got rotated and that messed up reverse when we put it back on. Forward was fine. All it takes is a few turns and you're struggling to get into gear. It's a simple measurement of the height of the shift rod once the lower unit is off the engine.

I just replaced the cables on my 18 Outrage.
Chances are it is the cables. If you have not replaced those cables since the motor was new then it is time anyhow.
My gear cable broke first and took me and the boat into a dock.
Then while repairing the other cable the other broke. So get two!
30-40 bucks a piece.
Installing them was not that hard. But to be on the safe side take a picture of the shifter after you pull it up off the console and do the same for the motor.
We got the order wrong and had a time remembering the way they sit.
One more piece of advice. Buy new cotter pins for the motor.
Wa were also able to fish the cables in without the removal of the console.
MAke double sure you get the right length cables to.
white lthium grease the shafts of the cables. This makes great shifting. You will think the motor is new.

I'm having the same problem as Key-z. What length are the cables? Where did you get them? I'm in Charleston SC as well.
thanks
Phil

18' Teleflex throttle and shift cables are just about right for the Outrage 18'...
