I am purchasing my first Whaler and thanks to this forum I am feeling very good about things. It has a 1989 Johnson 225 on it that runs well. I wanted to make sure I could get home with the kids so I am going to put a Yamaha T8 Kicker on it. Thanks for the info John Flook. The problem I am running into is that the Yamaha dealer I am getting the kicker from is saying that I cannot use dual controls and I should mount a side control. I really want dual controls. Does any one know if there is any dual controls that I could use or modify? In the article he uses Bombardier controls, will these work for a Johnson as well as the 1992 Evinrude?
Thanks,
Steve
Yes....
The newer style Bombardier controls will work for almost all motors.
They have the provision for either push or pull to throttle up or shift gears.
So, whatever the engine in question needs, the newer controls can handle it.
You most likely want the 1996 and newer which does not include the brand new series which is the 3rd photo... I am not sure about the brand new series.
John Flook uses the one in the second photo I believe.
Johnson and Evinrude are/were made by the same company so no difference there.
You might need the conversion kit for the 1995 and newer but you want the 1996 and newer controls for sure.
Thank you Joe. Your article is great as well. I read it through a couple of times. The tie rod you use is much cheaper and I will try and get one of those. The price I have been finding for John's tie bar is around $500.00! I was having a hard time with that since it is just a 24" piece of stainless steel. I was even thinking of having someone fabricate it for that price. I am torn as to wheather I should just pick up the kicker and do it all myself. Biggest problem is time. Thanks again for your time and help. I will try and find the answer about the newest controls and post the answer back here. Looking forward to getting on the water in our new 1989 22 Outrage!
