I have a friend and his wife from Redondo Beach, CA who will be in NYC Sept 25 - 27. If anyone is up for taking a couple of Left Coasters for a boat ride around the Statue of Liberty. Great couple. You will have a fun time and take a friend . . . . who has a boat in King Harbor (Redondo Beach) and I'm certain will reciprocate when you are in Southern California.

If all else fails the Staten Island Ferry offers a free ride that passes close to the Statue of Liberty. Just take a round trip.

Garris, OIA is John Mirassou, author of the book 'Only in America'. Just to put it like this, if he were to send someone to the Charleston area, I would be offering to give them a tour of the Charleston harbor. Not just in exchange for a boat ride with him in SoCal if I were to ever make it there, but I would bet the people he sends would be a pleasure to have on my boat as well.

Huck,
Point taken. My young adult years were in lower Manhattan (Soho and Greenwich Village) without two nickles to rub. We would laugh at folks in line for the $50 boat ride to go once around Lady Liberty with the New Yorker's "... Whadyah crazy! Just take the Ferry, it's dah same thing!...".

However, if I was situated in NYC it would be my pleasure to host a trip (if my boat ever gets wet again). I did a tour of Ellis Island and will never forget it. I saw my mom's side of the families name engraved on the dedicated wall from 1913. I would highly recommend a boat ride up the Hudson to West Point. Close your eyes and imagine "Last of the Mohican's". Even though a "City Boy" for a while, we always referred to upstate New York as going to "God's Country".

Billy Joel could have just as easily written "...I take a boat ride on the Circle Line... New York state of mind..."

Garris, that's cool that you can tour New York harbor and Ellis island and find your family lineage. Life hasn't brought me to the city yet, but I could see y'all calling upstate NY God's country.
