I'm looking to repower my 1989 15 Super Sport with a new Yamaha 70 HP. Does anyone have any experience with this set up? Also, what would be a reasonable out the door cost for engine and controls. I'm in SE Florida. Thanks.
Do you mean the Yamaha F70 or the two-stroke? A number of people, including me, have the F70 setup. Mine cost about $8K in parts, including controls and electronics, in 2011. It works well.
If I were to do it over again, I might well opt for the F60 instead - the incremental performance of the F70 over the F60 is not that great, and the smaller prop is cheaper and reduces your draft a little.
I have two Stiletto stainless props, an Advantage and a Star. Both match well with the motor in 13.25 x 15. The Star has better bite in rough water, which is where I am a lot of the time. However, the Star has so much bite in reverse that if you come in hot to a dock and pop it into reverse, you'll actually stall the motor. The Advantage is maybe a bit faster, probably better all around - I am still deciding.
