My 1981 Johnson 35 (remote) has what I think is a problem. When I shift into reverse, the motor goes into gear, and runs at idle. Moving the shift/throttle to increase the rpms does nothing. I have heard that some outboards will only run at idle in reverse. I could swear the first time I took the motor out and put it in reverse (having forgotten to flip the lock lever) the motor revved normally, and the motor jumped up - as it would if one forgets to lock it down. So, it appeared as if the throttle advance may have been working in reverse. I'm putting a couple photos on photobucket showing a closeup of the linkage on the motor.

There is a cylindrical black plastic piece with a spring around the outside of it that's mounted facing a cam plate that rotates toward the other piece. The plastic piece has a concave dish in the top of the protruding shaft, and both sides of the shaft are also dished. The plastic assembly simply pivots toward the cam assembly, but is not connected in any way to it. It's just flopping back and forth. Anyone familiar with what might be wrong, if anything?

I'll have to check how my Evinrude 35hp works but it is the same year model and had throttle in reverse. The first thing I'd check is, does the throttle cable physically move any when trying to go full reverse. If you don't see any movement check inside the remote. As far as the piece "just flopping back and forth", sounds suspect, I don't recall anything loose in that area.

Turpin, Thanks for replying. If you look at the closeup photo, you can see that black piece rotates from its attachment point at the bottom. I've deduced that there is a notch in the whitish cam piece to the left of that, and a corresponding "ridge) on the black plastic piece. I believe the black piece should be rotated CCW over the cam with the "ridge" riding on the cam (it's greased, I notice). It's also pretty clear that the "post" part on the top of the black piece was probably broken off, since the fracture signs on the end are pretty clear. In the closeup, ou can also see that there are 2 empty threaded holes in the engine block right above the cam assembly. I suspect that somehow that black piece may have been attached or somehow controlled by something that's missing there.
I was hoping someone would respond who has this engine, and - if at all possible, send me a closeup photo of this particular area of the motor. My persistence here is because I'm rapidly losing faith in the dealer as having enough skill to sort this out....

This is what I have, the way this works on my engine is, on the right side of motor (starboard), I have only a shifter cable connection and on the port side is a throttle cable.
In no way on the motor is the 2 sides connected and if I was experiencing this issue I would probably look in my remote.
This could one of those scenarios where we have fairly identical engines with the one odd ball deference.
Let me no if more info or pictures are needed.

Thanks for the photos and info! I see you have the "cam" assembly in the center of the photos, but there's no black plastic assembly to the right of it. It's possible that my assembly is a remnant from a tiller version that was converted to remote. In my experience (a long time) I never saw what my motor has on it. As you said, the remote lever shifts the gears to reverse, and then the throttle cable controls the rpm from the other side. It's possible the throttle cable adjustment for reverse is not set correctly.... I'll check it out. Thanks again.

Well, I took the questionable assembly off, disconnecting it at the shift lever cam, and my reverse throttle speed now functions. I'm sure the offending piece was broken off at the top, and the assembly was blocking the shift cam from moving completely forward. Still not sure what that black plastic assembly (it's sort of a plunger setup) was for. I now see that it probably rode on top the the shifter cam and was attached at the threaded hole above the cam (when the plunger assembly was complete and unbroken). Still surprised that nobody has a 25-30-35 Johnson/Evinrude engine with this setup....
