I wonder if any body has any thoughts on this. Im still waiting for news from my mechanic but i might have to repower my 73 Montauk. But when you do that do you take a big money hit right away? I mean if i go to sell boat in 2 or 3 years have i just lost a huge amount of money or can you get back alot of that on the sale? I have allways viewed a repower as a long term commitment to that boat. I kept my old 13 foot whaler for 12 years after the repower. Im hopeing to buy a bigger whaler down the road. Thanks Joe
You are probably right. You never really recoup the investment from a new engine unless you keep the boat for many years.
What about a used engine? Many people are trading in their old 2 strokes for the newer 4 strokes and many of these used engines don't have very many hours on them. You have to be careful though.
I personally don't like the idea of a used engine but then I don't like the idea of a used car either. However, I have purchased many used cars in the past...
It is a tough decision.
You might try iBoats.com and see what specials they have on engines. Some are used very little and some are new. This will give you an idea on prices...
Your used Montauk will be worth more with a newer engine than your Montauk with the older engine. How much more is the question.

Well knock on wood but it looks like i bought some time on the repower. My mechanic found a bad fuel pump. It was totally bad and letting fuel into the engine and causing the carbs to flood. Also a vacuem leak. I have had a couple of electrical problem over the last year and half. I think i solved those myself but missed the recent one, the fuel pump! Engine has pretty good even compression. Should be ok. I will not be sure untill i get a couple of fishing trips on it. Thanks jow
Well went out last saterday and motor ran very well. Put about an hour and a half on it at various speeds. Looks like its going to be fine. I guess now i dont have to run out and repower after all. It gives me some more time to decide on getting larger Whaler or keeping this one. Thanks Joe
