What pitch High Five prop is best for my 1994 Outrage 21?
I just had my High Five prop stolen.
I did not note the pitch as it came with the boat.
Engine is a Johnson Oceanrunner 250 2 stroke V8 Long shaft
Whaler is a 1994 Outrage 21.
Goal is to get on plane easily with 65 gallons fuel and 2 to 3 passengers.
Which is pitch is best suited for the replacement High Five prop?
Propeller selection is very complicated. There is a lot to know and understand.
The measurement of the pitch of a propeller blade is expressed in inches.
Keep in mind, propeller sizes are not identical across brands and materials . A 18" Mercury prop will not necessarily perform the same as a 18" Stiletto. This is because the blade geometry is different.
One can compare size within a brand/model. i.e. Mercury Enertia 16" versus an Enertia 18". Note both are stainless steel.
When members are seeking prop advice, either replacement or new, the advice is:
Ensure engine is mounted at the appropriate height. Most factory installations and many dealers mount motors too low..
The anti-cavitation plate should be 1-2" above the bottom of the hull when the engine is mounted on the transom.
Evinrude E-TEC's generally perform their best on Boston Whaler hulls mounted close or as high as they can go. Older Mercury outboard motors have 5 mounting holes in the upper set versus the standard 4 mounting holes in most motors.
The most ideal prop will allow the boat, with a light load, full fuel tank(s) and operator to reach the middle of the outboard motor's wide-open-throttle (WOT) range (5000-5500 on most motors, 5500-6000 on Yamaha's, 5800-6250 on some Mercury Verado's.)
A general rule is a motor should be 2 holes up (bolt in 3rd hole, counting down from the top).
It is also recommended that stainless props perform better than aluminum and are worth the added expense.
If you pull a skier or tube, typically carry a lot of gear/passengers or boat is really snotty conditions, drop down 2" of pitch from the ideal size.
