I have a 50hp johnson, 1999, theres an aluminum 12 1/4 by 15.

In a post that I already have I mentioned the prop size and I was incorrect, I went outside today while installing some rod holders on the boat, I looked at the prop to read it.

Is it possible to over rev this motor with current setup?

The boat is as stated 1966 16" Custom.

I don't think its water logged, as it floats with gear and the motor above the little side pieces on the stern, I dunno what they are called, but it looks like you can see under the boat, from the side, if you know what I mean.

I also pryed at a couple spots on the boat to looks for wet foam, I also installed some stuff on the boat an have not come up with wet drill bits.

The motor seems to run great, now that it doesn't overheat.

My tach however was said to be bad, as the mechanic took a timing gun and said the idle was set correct. about 800rpm, my tach states 1100 rpm.

It does track somewhat, I rev the motor, it goes up, really fast, at WOT for top speed test, I was pegged past 7000 RPM. And it screamed up there.

The motor is mounted in the blind holes, and prop doesn't cavitate.

All that being said, do you think the motor could actually be getting 7000 rpm?
And to inform you, I don't think the 100 bucks for a new tach is going to happen anytime soon, and I run the boat around 20-25 MPH where my tach read somewhere around 5000-6000 rpm, I don't remember right now.

I know my voltage regulator could be part of the equation, but I don't want to tackle that either.

I do know about tiny tachs, just want to know if its possible to over rev it.

Thanks.

And I know you can't pick a better prop for the boat, since I don't know current rpms, but could you guess one based on understanding/prior history/knowledge?
