new 40hp Etec on a 73 13' sport?

Member Posts: 19 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/30/07	about a month ago i finnally was able to purchase from a friend his 73 13' whaler sport. He bought it when it was new and put it in storage around 1983, everything is original, the gelcoat is coming back to almost new! i even have the owners manual and two original blueprints for the layout of the boat. How can i make a new 40hp Etec work on a 73 boat? I run a fiberglass shop and could easily raise the transom, i would rather not though! I would like to keep it as org as possible. I really like the new Etec's and that would be my first choice if it would work.

I opted for the Nissan 40 tldi that is still available in the short shaft. I t weighs 208 lbs with ptt but it's not a real problem. I just checked and "discount outboards.com" has them offered for $4,650.00 with no freight complete. They come with everything you need. I really like mine for smooth operation, no smoke, easy start, smooth idling, good power, and my boat flies! Mike Edited by moose on 07/25/07 - 2:26 PM

Member Project Albums Posts: 269 Comments: 7 Joined: 10/10/05	I think a 1973 13' will have the 20" transom, but there were some oddball things going on around those times with transom lengths and colors. I have seen a 40 etec on a 13 footer before, but only from a distance. It looked like it sat fairly low in the water, but not much worse than my 40 nissan carb motor from what i could tell. If he's out there at Keywaddin tomorrow, I'll get pics and his first hand accounts of the combo. Did they use the same old 2 cyl OMC design for the 40 etecs? Or did they start from the ground up? if it's the old 2 cyl motor with the Etec induction grafted onto it, it would probably be a very reliable motor. On the hunt for a classic 19 or 21 Whaler

Some have setbacks and other just raise the engine. Today, I do not think you can go wrong with either the Etec or Nissan/Tohatsu. Both are environmentally friendly and have the acceleration of a two stoke. There are also other advantages of a setback/jack plate. You will be able to fine tune performance by easily adjusting engine height until you are happy. Also you will clear some of the cables and wires out of the well since the engine will move off the transom by 5 inched or so. You may need a new steering cable… Normally these jack plates are used on high performance applications but even with a 40 HP you will get benefits. I have 90 HP on a 17 ft and I considering this. Not sure how well these small 4 strokes preform compared to a 2 Stroke DFI. Interesting to note that some of their larger 4 strokes are monsters. 75 HP at 369 lbs.... Double the 40.
