I recently purchased a 1964 Sakonnet 16 that did not include a motor, so I have been watching the market the last month for a used one. I came across a 2001 Honda 90 4-stroke that has my interested peaked. The price is only $2,000 because its been heavily used by a fisherman with over 1400hrs on it. Basically its been a four season workhorse that's been run almost daily. The owner cant couldn't say enough about this motor and readily inviting me to do a compression test, so at this point I'm assuming compression will check out. Before I drive the 1.5 hours to go see this engine, I thought it might be good to throw it up on the forum for opinions.
My price range is $2000 to $3000 so it's looking like it would be between this engine and or lesser used 2000 - 2005 2 stroke.
Additionally this motor comes in at 360lbs! I know the 90hp falls within the manufactures specs but did they know in the 60's that 90hp 4 strokes would be that heavy. My transom seems to be in real good shape, but still its a 1964.
my concern is not necessarily the weight as I think by moving a few things around it can balance out nicely - my Etec is 375 and my boat does not lean sternward.
but ... 2001 ... no. I think you can get newer AND newer technology for that price or newer but older technology which is more bulletproof.
While that series of motor is very good and the hours are not excessive, it is heavy. I have a friend with an 1980's Montauk and this engine and is sits pretty low.
