Hello - can't get my 1986 suzuki dt40 oil injected outboard 40 hp to turn over after I replaced the fuel, fuel lines, and connectors. I don't know anything about boat engines. Do I need to go a suzuki mechanic only? Or can I go to the local guys who work mercs, evinrude etc.
Thanks

Does the motor turn over but not start?

If it does not turn over, there is an electrical issue.

If it does not start, does it fire but not start?

How old are the spark plugs?

I presume you have re-primed the fuel lines to get fuel into the motor.

You squeezed the primer bulb 3/4 times until firm.
Did you use choke?

Please detail the steps you take. It could be technique or a mechanical issue. Lets find out which before calling a mech.

It turns, just won't turn over (if that makes sense) . Here's what happened.

After purchasing boat (1986 13'), rookie mistake was filling up 6gal tanks when they had fuel in them, probably from over winter. Took her out, made it about a quarter mile and the engine died.

Paddled to a near by sailing club and one of the guys there wanted to check it out. He said the carb was flooded with water. Told me to replace the old bulb, hose (they looked old and had tape over many spots) filter and gas. I did that as well as replacing the connectors.

Took forever to prime bulb. Found a video online where guy says to take the line that goes to engine off and pump with finger on/off removed hole. So I "think" gas is going to engine now although sometimes it feels like nothing happening.

My dad seems to think there is no spark coming from plugs. He pulled it and held a screwdriver next to it as I cranked. Don't know how old plugs are. I thought the guy I bought from said he replaced not long ago.

That could be it the problem. I assume I'll need to order a special plug? I'd rather not take it to a mechanic but I don't know anything about boat engines except where to put oil.

There may be water/bad gas in the carburetors. There is a drain on the carb but given your inexperience, I would suggest you have a mechanic drain the carbs, replace the plugs.

Do you know any boating friends who are slightly mechanically inclined.?

If he comes back with a $300 list of items, be wary.
