Boston Whaler 2005 Montauk 170 / 90HP Merc 4 stroke - aftermarket ~22gallon fuel tank.

Bought this boat this winter ..boat is in great shape.

Owner mentioned that the 'peg' for the gas quick connect was broken and needed to be 'glued / and/or replaced or tie wrapped'.

Regardless im trying to get in touch with him. Its true . the quick connect does not stay in all the way (tied wrapped it).

Boat starts right up .. and runs a bit, idles, the ball seems to lose stiffness (lack of gas) .. it will run pretty good opened up (3000rpm) but i try to get it over 1000.. to say 1200 ..stall. It also stalls at idle and seems to run rough even at idle = even like a knocking. Seems clearly like a gas supply problem.

there was very little gas it the tank previous owner put additive in it.
carbs were cleaned before last season
I added fresh 5 gallons of gas.
is this a lack of vacuum on the gas tank? not sure condition of gas filter (in line) now sure what i need to replace the quick connect (I have picture) or even how to go about troubleshooting help ...

Do you have a spare 6 gallon fuel tank you could try?

If not, I would start with replacing both fittings on the fuel tank and the hose. Cheap place to start.
I suggest you use only Mercury fittings. Not aftermarket fittings.

Any Mercury Outboard dealers close to you?

If not, any good boating supply should carry some original Mercury parts.
If not West Marine should work but they are usually a little higher then most other places.

I'm surprised it has quick disconnects on it. The fuel hose on my 2006 90hp Merc on my Montauk is all clamped on hose barbs.

I have quick disconnects on my boat that come off the gas filter to the main and kicker motor. Replace like Joe says but also keep an eye on them. They sometimes get banged and disconnect but still look attached. Make sure a secure connection. From personal experience I replaced the gas filter because of lack of fuel only to look over 2 inches and find it was the fitting all along.

The couplers did the trick .. probably as well as a slight bit of stale gas .. got it running and topped it off and its running decent.

Stalling is gone (99% of the time) and it is pretty smooth.

It has stalled maybe 1-2 since. Maybe needs a tune up.

There is a definitely a sputtering around 1700 rpm .. when you throttle to that .. the rpms actually start to go down and push the throttle forward a bit more .. it sorta jumps to 2000 rpm.

Ideas?

If the engine is not fuel injected, you should have the carbs cleaned. Deposits, old fuel will lead to poor running.

Don't add fresh fuel to old gas. It's not like the old days. Run old gas in your mower, tractor, weed trimmer etc.

If your fuel will not be used in a few weeks, add a stabilizer (i.e. Stabil) to each tank full.

When owning a pre-used boat, it is good to do a lot of maintenance since you are never sure how the boat and engine were cared for.

This includes replacing or changing:

fuel, air filters
lower unit oil
engine oil
water pump impeller
spark plugs
lubricating engine steering rod
