I just recently purchased a 1986 17' Montauk. It is powered by a 90hp Johnson VRO. The tach works the spedo and trim gauge do not. I have a humminbird matrix 37 fish finder to install with a transom transducer and speed/temp wheel. I will be using the boat for Mammoth lakes and local So Cal. inland waters. My plans are to re-wire the counsel with fuses and a few more pull switches. I am asking for some advise on ideas that have worked before I scew anything up and have to take it into a professional. I have some electronic knowledge (with car stereos) so I would like to do it on my own.

SAPO,

Congratulations on your purchase.

1. You would have to check the trim gauge to see if it is connected up to the wiring harness properly.
There is also a sending unit on the engine that may not be working properly. This unit has an arm on it that rides against the engine which tells the gauge at what angle the engine is. This arm may be frozen....

2. The speedo has nothing electric other than a light if it even has the light installed. The speedo runs off of a pitot which can be located externally on the transom or on the engine. The pitot is connected to the speedo via a small rubber hose....

Congrats! - your boat could give you decades of service!
There was a great idea posted earlier about mounting a piece of starboard to the transom using 5200 (?) to create a transducer mounting surface without drilling the hull (wish i had that idea before i mounted my transducer!). that way you do not have to fill and drill as technology changes over time.
do a search for "transducer" or "starboard" to find the post.
