Any comments pro and con re: merc 125 engine. Not familiar with this engine and have read some about it's 2+2 feature. Doe it work or is it something to stay away from. The engine is a 1998 with only 400 hours. Thanks

Almost all the comments I have read say something along the lines of:

Great engine but the transition from 2 to 4 is bad. If you troll or go WOT, great. If not, keep looking.

I owned a 100 hp merc that was the 2+2. I can not say it was a bad motor. The transition form two to four never caught me off guard. It was always when I was going from idle speed to getting on plane. The oil tank is a pain in the but if it has not already been switched for the better one. The oem tank did not have a good seal at the top and the oil sensor would always go out in the bottom of the tank. there is a replacement tank with a better sealing neck but the screw in cap is troublesome because the opening in the cowl is square and the cap is round… round peg square hole… .. my motor ran grate it was on a 17 foot EdgeWater..Would I buy another one… Only if it was the very best deal around. If the price is Absolutely awesome I would say go for it… If the price is completive I would say buy a motor with better resale… Opti Max, or Yamaha.
