So I know there are tons of things to consider with this question but I'm asking for your opinion with the given data. My local boat place has a used etec 150 for sale. It came off a boat with twin 150s. They tell me it has 250 hours on it. They have already sold the left turn unit and I spoke with the buyer. He says it's great and was everything he wanted and more. No problems on that motor. So given that little information, do you think mounted with controls and gauges, tax, tag and title out the door for $7500 is a good deal?

a new 2007 150HP cost 10k plus controls. Ask the dealer to confirm the hours, the warranty, any work that has been done and confirm the software is patched to the latest. See if you can get him to throw in the 300 hour service, if it has not already been done for the price and it's a pretty good deal. He should put the engine on the computer and print you out the report.

I purchased a used E-tec with a boat. In 2009 the E-tec's technology is now with the current motor. Pre 2009 is a good motor but... . My whole "parts" boat with 2009 E-tec 200hp HO was $10,000 and I got a custom rocket launcher, bimini top, all the controls and rigging, an anchor winch, hydraulic steering, and misc. goodies. I sold the "parts" boat (an extremely clean 1981 22ft Regal with an Armstrong bracket) for $5,000 with all my old rigging. I carefully removed all my old rigging which included a recently rebuilt powerhead 1980 235hp Johnson outboard, steering, etc... . I had a two day road trip and several days of careful component exchange.
You have the opportunity to get a 7 year old motor with early technology and part swapping for 25% savings. Your call. I think there may be a better deal out there with a little elbow grease and/or time investment.

Edit: the Bay area (expensive) has that motor at $6500 average per NADA. $7500 out he door with all the rigging fair. I would hold out (if possible) for a 2009 or newer 150hp

Thanks for the input. I was unaware of the tech upgrade in 2009. I have not haggled but may see if I can do better.

I would not necessarily call it an "upgrade", just a change. All E-tecs have been consistently well regarded.

Different systems on the Etec have been improved over the years, but the improvements haven't been vast enough to warrant not considering any engine newer than 2005.
Never hurts to pitch a number and see what happens.
If you do end up purchasing, make sure the dealer goes over your fuel system well and does the recommended BRP testing. A clean fuel supply is key to longevity of these engines as is being propped to the optimal RPM range.

Derwd24 I'm using this repower as an opportunity to finally swap out my fuel tank and replace all the lines. I already discussed with the dealer that I would want them to de-rig the boat and then let me have it back for a couple weeks before installing the new motor.

the nice to have changes since 2009 was the ability to retrofit the newer controls that allow you to turn the RPMs. Not really enough of a difference to pass up a good deal.
