1994 Montauk repower with 90 E-tec

I have decided to go with a 90 E tec for my 1994 montauk. Anyone have experience with transom bolt location? I've read that 2 or 3 holes up work best Also dealer suggests going with a 4 blade Rogue or will do 3 blade Viper if I want. Want the best speed/top end possible ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS OUT THERE SURE WOULD BE APPRECIATED

All reports here state that motor should be mounted all the way up on your Montauk.

With a modern profile propeller you want to be all the way up. Is the dealer supplying you with a prop? If so, you want the viper 17". If not, you can save a few bucks and do just as well if not better with the Stiletto Advantage 1 in 15" pitch.

I have a 2010 90 ETEC on my 1978 Montauk and love it.

I only tried the Viper 17" on my last outing and I'm still running 2 holes up instead of 3 so I wasn't optimized for top speed. Running 2 holes up with myself, my German Shephard, 12 gal. of fuel, and my bimini folded in it's boot and raised, I found that idle to 40 mph seemed instantaneous. I was running at 42.5 mph trimmed out and still accelerating past 5300 when I pulled back. My only comparison is with the Stiletto 17" which is actually more like 18" or even 19". The Stiletto runs over 45 MPH when 2 holes up at roughly the same RPM. I felt that the slightly less pitch of the Viper gave it much better acceleration and also the low speed vibration that the E-tec 90 is known for is mitigated somewhat. The Stiletto 17 is faster however it may not be a good match for a smirked hull. Most guys with your boat can't break 45 MPH and they tend to use the Stiletto 15 instead. When the dealer did the prop trials withy my Etec 90 last summer they settled on a Viper 19 (not the 17) and recorded top speed of 44 mph. I did get it to 44 once by myself on a partial tank and flat calm, but with any passengers in the boat it was more like 42.

How high are you mounted and what was your RPM at 44 MPH? I think the Viper 17" should hit that same 44 MPH at or near max RPM for the E-tec 90.

Tom Clark reccomended a 13 1/4 X 15 Stiletto Advantage for the new E-TEC 90 being put onmy 1984 Montauk 17. It was also recommended that I have the engine mounted all the way up but I didn't listen and had it mounted in the second hole. Then after several runs I had the engine mounted all the way up. The only thing I don't like about it is putting it away for the winter.
I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport. |

The RPMs were 5300 at WOT. I know it's mounted high but not sure if it is all the way up, and it's still in storage so I can't take a look. It sounds like most use the 17 if it is a Viper but it seems like you might want to try the 19. I do sometimes get some porpoising at high speed but can usually correct it by adjusting the trim, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the prop.

The 17" Viper is a good prop for that boat/motor combination. The Rogue would be a poor one.
The E-TEC 75/90 does just fine mounted three holes up (as high as it can go) on the transom of the 16'-7" Whalers.
