I have a 1972 16 Cohasset w/ a 1996 Evinrude 88HP motor. I need to hoist up the motor with a cherry picker to wet sand / paint / gel coat the bottom. There are three Eye-bolt inserts on top of the flywheel. I have tried every Eye bolt I can find (5/16 fine thread and coarse thread to 5/16 metric thread). I am having no luck, everytime I try the 5/16, it fits the hole perfectly but will not match up threads and screw down into the hole. Any help would be super appreciated.
You do not need to lift from the flywheel. I recommend you purchase a lift bracket and the two screws that will allow you to properly lift the motor. You can purchase the OE spec hardware, items #67 and #71, from marineengine.com. All 88/90 hp outboard motors were fitted with lift brackets.
Also found out in another forum that those are 5/16 - 24 eye bolts that fit the top of that flywheel, that came from http://www.mscdirect.com/product/74647207
