i recently purchased my first boat a 1988 13' ss whaler. after some practice backing it up in a nearby parking lot i decided to take it to a lake. it really is a amazing boat. my question is on motor position during trailering. should i leave down or prop it up? all suggestions are welcome thanks

I trailer a 22' Outrage with a 200 hp Merc. I place the engine in the up position and "lock" it into position. Once home, I return the engine in the lower position, fresh water flush it, and get it ready for the next outing.

I, like ibikeak, have always trailered my motor with the motor all the way up and then flipping the lock to let the motor rest on the lock. Now I have a new Evinrude ETEC and they tell you in the owners manual not to trailer it resting on the motor lock. They reccomend using a motor support bracket, which few have and let it support the weight of the motor. You can purchase one at boaters world for about $40.00.

In the "LOCKED UP" Position, otherwise you might rip the lower unit off on a driveway, speed bump, etc.."Flushing" with the rabbit ears is done in the "Down position". After Flushing/fogging the engine for winter storage, the motor should be stored in the down position, so that water can drain out of the heads (or head), and not cause damage by freezing/expanding and cracking the head.
