im the proud owner of a 73 13' whaler, i bought the bought from a good friend, he was the original owner, when i met him in 1990 the boat was hanging in his shop, i said steve how long has that been hanging there? he replied since 82 or 83 something like that. well i said in 1990 i want that boat, ofcourse he said no!! through the yrs ive asked for him to give, sell trade anything but still he would not budge! Last week i find out steve is shutting down his shop and sailing for a couple yrs, so now i know i got to get to him fast i say steve how bout that whaler, he told me he was gonna give it to his brother , i told him he would not appreciate this boat like me, he actually agreed!! friday he said 2g and the boat and a 3yr old really nice traler, my checkbook could not come out fast enough. i picked the boat up saturday and moved it to my shop.. I run a very big boat repair facility on the chesapeake, well i run the fiberglass shop, the boatyard is harrington harbor north in tracys landing md, its 38 acres sometimes we will have upto 1300 or 1400 boats on land! our bussiness is called osprey marine composites.. weve got a pretty decent web site if anyone wants to check it out... so i will be asking many questions about my new purchase and have no problem answering ques about fiberglass and such! here is something interesting my boat has been in a climate controlled shop for at least 23yrs when i put one of my moisture meters on the transom it read wet, not to the point were i need to be concerned, i also sounded it and i did not hear any soft spots. I will probably open it up this winter or next, the rest of the boat read dry as can be. One thing i can say is make sure if anything is screwed into your boat anywhere make sure it is bedded properly, ex a 4yr old baha about 28' the centerconsul go fast fishing boat type, well around all the expection ports on the floor had nothing bedding it. The owner was the second owner, he just spent a ton of money on this boat and was wondering why his fordeck "felt soft" I popped the ring around the expection plate and saw rotten balsa, i took my finger and dugout some black crap that used to be balsa about 3.5yrs ago, i thought he was gonna faint, we rebuilt his whole cockpit floor... well gotta go love this site i hope to have pictures of my whaler up soon

I ditto Joe's sentiments. Sounds like you have a winner there. Glad you're around! Keep posting, and post some pictures on your own Personal Page. Looking forward to hearing from you

I like the "JEDI mind trick" he used to get the boat !
his bro would not take of the boat, ive always low low low balled my friends in the industry, hah hah it seems they need me more than i need them, so when i call on a favor i always go for the gold, meaning i say just give me so and so, it has not worked yet but im still trying!! well i did get a 25hp johnson for 500.00 from jim weaver who builds weaver custom sportfishing boats... his shop is next to mine. im not gonna use this engine for my boat, i want something alittle bigger, were gonna put it on my buddys carolina skiff, its got a 4hp now.... ohh yea ive been told i have jedi like qualities..hah ha...i sure dont spell like a jedi, excuse my poor grammer and spelling or are they the same..

Jedi mind influence... it does resemble that!____
Have you investigated what would be an ideal motor for that 13?
so far ive been trying to find a 40hp 2stroke shortshaft, although a friend who has the same boat said if fact a long shaft will work!! my friend has a towboat business, and one of his boats he uses for towing is the 13' whaler, ofcourse he has bigger towboats also!

I've been having difficulty finding Duratec high gloss additive locally, and shipping is expensive, because it's considered hazardous. It has a short shelf life, so stores are reluctant to stock it.
I'm going to be in the Annapolis area this Saturday or Sunday. Do you know where I could get a gallon of it? I also need to buy 3 gal. of white gelcoat (unwaxed), styrene thinner, a gallon of polyester resin, and 10 running yards of 38" wide 6 oz. cloth.
Also, if you're around, would love to stop in and see your shop or your "new baby."

Dan, use Jamestown distributing. They'll mail it to your front door. I hope this helps.

jjaywill,
short shaft motors are getting hard to find. I have a Nissan 40 hp tldi short shaft. I don't know if it is still available in the short shaft. Mine is a couple of years old. I just had it installed on the boat, but I bought it a couple of years ago and let it sit on the dealer's floor till I was ready. It's a really strong, smooth motor. It weighs just over 200 lbs with ptt so it sits a little low in the water but I don't mind that at all. I'm pretty sure it is available in 30 hp also and even smaller.
