trolling motor battery opinion/questions

Member Personal Page Posts: 145 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/28/10	I have finally finished mounting my Minnkota 70# thrust trolling motor on the bow of my 1987 Montauk. When testing I noted that the propeller was turning pretty slowly. hooked up the battery charger and the initial reading was 58% charge. charged for around 8 hours and it finally hit 100%. I have attempted to charge other batteries in the past which ended up being BAD according the charger - Schumacher brand. the motor is a 24 volt. I 'inherited' it in non-working condition and had it repaired. the repairman told me it could run on one battery or two but it would only run about 40% as long on one battery. my battery is a group 24 interstate green and white battery. I have moved my batteries (trolling and starting) into the console - no room there for 3 batteries IMO. what does anyone's experience say about trolling motor operating issues on 12 volt only and does anyone have a 'super' group 24 battery opinion ?? 1987 Montauk 17, 2013 Etec 115

Member Posts: 32 Comments: 0 Joined: 12/07/13	I'm thinking the same, 24V, 84# great white; I'll have to run 2 batts's. for 24 volts. I think placement of the batts is the ?????, if installed in the console, and the wiring is run back to the stern and then up the gunnel to the front, you are looking @ about 25 ft. of wiring (loss of power) If the batts are installed in the stern area, you cut down the wiring distance, but have batts exposed now. I don't know of a way to run the wiring strait to the front without exposing the wire. mike

I'm not using the trolling motor every trip ... although I plan on using it a lot. 1987 Montauk 17, 2013 Etec 115

Member Personal Page Posts: 311 Comments: 0 Joined: 12/07/06	I didn't know you could get 24v out of a single battery, are you saying you are running it on 12v? I run my wire straight from the console attached at the motor via quick connect so I can coil / store it in the console when not in use.

( check performance ) If you can check voltage that would be helpful in determining your issue. FYI I was able to put 3 batteries in the console and ran trolling motor cables from console to stern then along gunwale to bow. In my personel pages You can see conduit that I ran cables in.
