I am looking at a 50 hp 4 stroke Yamaha engine to purchase for my 1976 13 Whaler.
Is this engine too heavy or too powerful for the boat?
Thanks.

A 4 stroke might be too heavy.

CES is right about the weight. You might want to look into an Evinrude ETEC

I have a 50 hp mercury on my 13 ft whaler. Mine is currently in restore phase. When i was younger that 50hp merc would scoot! Like a bat out of hell. I am looking forward to the near future when i am going to be skimming the water .

We have had one with a Yamaha 50 PRO 2 stroke, works perfect. My buddy had same supersport with a 40 Merc $ stroke which has almost same weigt as the F 50 of Yamaha 4 stroke.
JUST DO IT, you won´t regret it, it makes boating more fun!
regards.

The 40-60 ETEC's (2 stroke) weigh in at @ 240# and the Yamaha 40-60hp 4-strokes weigh in at 183 (4 stroke 40hp) and 237# for the 50-60hp 4 stroke. The 50 hp Yamaha 2 stroke is a steal at 189#. I really don't know why those dang 40-60 ETEC's are so heavy. However, when OMC was in bidness, their 40-60 hp 2 cyl engines weighed in at 180-190# and ran forever. But, if the new 2 cyl ETEC is 50 pounds heavier, so what ??? How much is it really going to matter to you waterline? One inch ? Either one will serve you well. It all depends on which color you like ! I like ................BLUE !!!

Protek initially put a 50hp Johnson on my whaler and it cracked the transom....so don't listen to that dude. I have a 40 hp Yamaha and that little thing scoots accross the water like a rocket.
