Has anyone used ask dot.com for information on their engines? They have Mercury certified mechanics that will answer your questions but their reply might cost you $30 plus dollars for an answer. Is it worth the information or questionable you are getting a legit mechanic?

I do not trust computer pay for services/advice in general. Stay local, more accountability. I just recognized your name. Still "having demons" deciding on the next course of action with the mercury motor? You already received some very detailed advice from some very generous and knowledgeable people (that is what this forum is about). Save your money. In fact, the best advice you received was from Phil T about blocking the bottom because the bottom drops with a "POP". The heck with the motor casting, no broken foot.

Before you go to a pay service, post your question on the mercury forum at the sight below. The guy who runs the site is a Mercury mechanic and will most likely be able to help you out.

Bill, I replied to your PM with lots of detail. Check it out. If my ideas work out, please help out others on the forum by posting what worked for you.

If you provide us your location, I think the members will provide you the names of local Mercury or other professional outboard mechanics who you can contact.
When it comes to outboard motors (and other items) "penny wise, pound foolish" applies.
Maintaining your outboard is important for your personal safety. The last thing you want is to be stranded in the ocean. I have learned from others misfortune (rescuing stranded boaters).
