Has anyone ever repowered a 22 outrage mid eighties with a 150hp?
I ran a 21 cuddy cabin boat this weekend with a Yamaha 150hp 4-stroke and it ran great. Any input?

What kind of boat did you drive with the 150 on it? The less deadrise a boat has the Hp it needs to rise up on plane easier and keep on plane. A classic 22 Outrage has a 16 degree deadrise angle.

I know there are people who have rigged a 150 on a 22 Outrage however, it would be something I would never consider doing.

Can I ask what is you thought behind it?

Many think it will be cheaper.....Well to purchase it yes however, you will have to work the motor that much harder to propel the boat forward so any initial cost would be eaten up over the life of the motor in fuel costs.

Also since the motor has to work harder for the same performance you begin decreasing the life of the motor.

As for a 22 Outrage's resale...Well it will be GREATLY diminished do the 150.

After nearly 5 years with my 22 I could not imagine running that hull with anything less than a 200. Now I know the 22 Joe owned had a 175 2 stoke and he claimed it to be adequate. So to each their own.

The only time I have run a 22 hull with a 150 was with Our 22 Guardian. It runs TWIN 150's and just for S&G's I tilted one motor up and out of the water and but the boat on plane. After a long lumbering ride it finally planed off a reached 32-34 at WOT.

I ran a 21 Cobia with a deadrise of 20deg. the boat weighs 2750 lbs w/o engine.
I would never concider running a 22 outrage with a single 150 either until I ran this boat. we had three normal sized guys on it , It jumped on plan and ran great.
It was low on fuel, which will make a difference on a small boat. However the fuel burn was only 5.6 GPH at around 24 MPH I thought that was pretty impressive,
The initional cost is a concern but more important is the fuel burn. I don't want a $200.00 day each time I go fishing.
Thanks for your input

As Jeff mentions, my Outrage 22' Cuddy had a newer 1998 Johnson 175 hp two-stroke on it when I bought it and it was adequate. She did 40 mph via GPS on flat rippled water.

However, if I were to have repowered, I would have put a 200 hp E-Tec on it. It is rated for 240 hp but when you go up to the 225 hp motors, most of them add another 100 lbs. of weight.

I personally would not buy anything less than 200 hp for 22' Whaler.
