I am considering repowering my 1986 13 with a 4 stroke Yamaha that weighs about 12 pounds more than the old 2 stroke that is on the boat now. Would the 4 stroke be too heavy for my old Whaler?
Thanks so much,
Billfly

What size motor are you talking about?
No 4 stroke weighs 12 pounds more then the old 2 strokes of the same size.
See this current list of weights.

The 4 stroke Yamaha F25 weighs 170 pounds.
I don't remember what the Johnson 25 2 stroke weighs.

Thanks so much! Have been looking at the F25LA with a listed weight of 181 pounds, actually 11 pounds heavier than the year 2000 Johnson 2 stroke.

Not sure what you are comparing or where you are getting your weight information, and what model Johnson 25's you are referring to.
The 2000 Johnson 25hp, 2 stoke, 3 cylinder, short shaft, rope start engine weighed 151 pounds.
The same as above but 2 cylinder, weighed 115 pounds.
You don't mention what year 13' you have so we have no idea whether you need a Short or Long shaft motor or whether you are needing electric start, trim and tilt, etc.
Lost of different Johnson 25 configurations that year and lots of different weights.

I did a little more research on the motor you are looking at.
F25LA
That is a 25hp, 4 stroke, 20 inch Long Shaft, and Rope Start.
Weight = 179 pounds
Not sure what the "A" means in the last letter. It used to mean the year up to 2005 but they have changed their labeling system and don't mention anything about the A that I can find after 2005.
I believe most people here say preferred max weight should not exceed about 200 pounds.
Maybe others here will give you more info on what they have.

Depending on where you put your battery and gas, I would put a 220 lbs max weight on a 13 with a 20" transom. With a 15" transom 190lbs max. But that's just me. I have a 15" transom with a 1985 30hp Tohatsu that weighs about 130lbs.
