I just found out that my 1987 90hp Yamaha has bought the farm. I am looking to repower my Montauk 17 and I have been looking at the Yamaha 90HP 4 Stroke. I know it is 40 to 50 punds heavier than the 2 stroke.
When I got my quote they said that I should get all new rigging and controls for $750 as well as new steering cables for $350.
I was quoted the 4 Stroke Yamaha and prop installed at $8,325. This seems a little high to me.
My questions are
1. Will the extra 40-50 lbs of motor weight make a difference?
2. Do I need to replace the rigging and controls (1987 original equipment on boat now)?
3. Should I replace the steering cables (1987 original equipment on boat now)?
Thanks for your help. Before I drop about $10K on the boat I want to make sure I am doing it correctly.
I have a 1989 90, runs like new... Too bad yours bit the dust, did you see it coming? That Yamie, was a very light powerful mid sized engine. The new F90 are 108 LBS heavier. Your old 90 weighs 261 LBS. As far is the price, they are expensive, can't tell you if that is good price. I recall seeing someone on this forum getting a 90 merc 2 stroke for $5300 at bass pro-shops.
What ever you do you should go for the new rigging and wiring if you go the Yamie route. As far a s steering, if was used in salt it may also be at the end if is life. Mine has already been replaced, cables as well.
i'd try calling around and seeing if anyone has a 2 stroke left over. although they're no longer avalaible in the states as boat motors, i'm sure people have them left over. i've seen new old stock around here, but the prices usually aren't too different from buying a new one.
the reason that i'd reccomend searching for a 2 stroke is because of the weight issue. its not that much weight, but hey, it is extra weight. i don't think your transom will snap off or anything, but every pound counts when you're trying to go fast.
i don't know about the compatability of the old steering setup being connected to a new motor. if you had to replace your steering cables, you could always put the old ones on ebay or craigslist.org to try and recoop some of the cost of the repower.
If you have to replace everything anyway, look into the Evinrude ETEC............One hell of a motor and a fantastic warranty. They were giving a 7 year warranty and I think that program is good thru the end of July. Will be a lot lighter than the 4 stroke too. I have one and it's the best motor I've ever owned. Quiet, sips gas and oil, no fumes and hauls tail!
I just completed a major renovation project on our 89 Classic Montauk that included installing a 2007 Honda BF90D 4 stroke & Hydraulic steering. A few thoughts about the motor & the "periphials". Your biggest decision is probably 2 or 4 stroke. From there, the differences w/i 4 stroke are not that significant. For instance, my new motor has fuel injection/VTEC, etc. and priced at $8200 base. Then there were the periphials (gages, binnacle, etc.) which of course I replaced since I too had a Yamaha 90 that died. Even if you were to replace w/another Yamaha 90 2 stroke I'd still go w/a new binnacle & gages simply because they're as old as the engine that just died & probably will soon themselves. Now about the steering. I went w/a Sea Star Hydraulic for about $650....it is absolutely worth the extra $300 to have this! The difference is phenominal! I'll never have cable again. Oh yeah, did I mention that my rough calculation on our first tank fillup of gas is 18 gallons for 14 hours, which is 1.3 gallons per hour.....compared to our old yammi...WOW! Good Luck w/it all!
